Equity Ski IV to the Alps

Equity Ski IV to the Alps

Bill, was part of a six-strong Equity ski team that recently took 32 party leaders on our Easter Inspection Visit to the Alps. Here’s what happened on the trip...

"

Having worked for many years with Equity coordinating school ski trips, I know just how important IV's are for party leaders and for Equity staff. It's a great chance for us to meet party leaders face-to-face and to give them an in-depth look at what our fantastic ski programme has to offer groups.

For the duration of the trip we would be based in Serre Chevalier in the stunning French Alps. Made up of three villages (Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Monetier) and the historic town of Briançon, the ski area is one of the biggest in France with over 250km of piste.

After arriving at our accommodation, the group was issued with lift passes and ski fit was taken care of, we then enjoyed welcome drinks and an evening meal.

The next morning we enjoyed a hearty breakfast and headed out to ski in fantastic conditions in Serre Chevalier, even on 15th April! The mixture of tree-lined runs and open piste is ideal for schools. We then visited the great range of accommodation here, including the Parc Hotel and the Hotel CIPPA in Briancon, and the Le Prorel in Chantemerle. Later on we met the local ESF (Ecole du Ski Francais) ski instructors who are an integral part of all our school ski trips here. The Sunday evening was spent relaxing in the bar.

The following day we crossed into Italy and visited some resorts in the Milky Way, an enormous ski area with a whopping 400km of piste! First up was Claviere, a charming resort just across the border from Montgenèvre. One of our most popular destinations for schools as it’s ideal for beginners, we took in the centrally located Hotel Roma, and the family-run Hotel Passo Pellegrino.

We then ventured on to nearby Sestriere, host of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Situated at over 2,000m, this high resort has an excellent snow record. We explored some of the accommodation options, including the Hotel Duchi d’Aosta and the Hotel Torre Rossa. Returning to France after lunch, we spent the afternoon skiing more of Serre Chevalier’s extensive piste. To round off the day, we enjoyed an entertaining pub quiz.

Day three was another busy one, this time the group was split in two; one group visited Les Deux Alpes, checking out the resort, inspecting three accommodations – The Belle Etoile, The Provencal and the People’s Hostel. They also enjoyed skiing some of the world-famous slopes.

The other group spent the day in Serre Chevalier with Equity’s Ski Ambassador, Olympian Chemmy Alcott. It was a great experience watching a true professional on the slopes! In the evening both groups reunited and watched as Chemmy gave her inspirational School Workshop to St Swithun’s Prep School who were staying in the Hotel Olympic in Chantemerle.

On day four the groups swapped around, one group going to Les Deux Alpes and the other group remaining with Chemmy Alcott and skiing in Serre Chevalier. For the last night in resort, we enjoyed a delicious evening meal which was kindly sponsored by one of our partner resorts, La Plagne.

The final day we rose early and travelled to Turin, spending the morning at leisure, exploring this great city before heading to the airport for the flight home. Overall, the Equity Easter Group Ski Inspection Visit was a fantastic success and the snow conditions were superb for this time of the year. The whole group had a great time and it was a perfect send-off to an incredible ski season.
