When it comes to winter sports, Britain isn’t always recognised for its increasing number of accomplishments, especially considering our tiny number of slopes to practice on, in comparison to our European and Scandinavian neighbours.
Over the past couple of Winter Olympics, team GB has seen growing success, bringing home a record number of medals at PyeongChang in 2018, with their eyes firmly set on increasing the record at the Beijing Games in 2022.
Part of the country’s growing success could be down to ESSkiA (English Schools’ Ski Association) which helps with grass roots skiing and encouraging youngsters to get into competitive skiing.
ESSkia has been striving to enhance the status of skiing in schools since 1978 with two of their main aims being to encourage as many students as possible to enjoying skiing at home and abroad, as well as improving the excellence of young skiers.
Over the years, ESSkia has provided training and competitive racing to a variety of winter sports athletes, helping them kickstart their professional career, including Charlotte Evans MBE, who shot to fame during the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games, as she guided visually impaired skier Kelly Gallagher to win gold in the women’s Super-G.

Encouraging young people to get into skiing and snowboarding is close to our hearts at Equity, so we are both delighted and proud to be sponsors of this year’s ESSkia National Championships Finals on the 5th and 6th October at Norwich Dry Ski Slope.
We’ll be attending the event, alongside Equity ambassador and four-time Winter Olympian Chemmy Alcott and a giant polar bear affectionately named Bode after the American alpine ski racer. Come on over to say hello, and we’ll be happy to chat to you about our school ski trips across Europe, the US and Canada. There will also be plenty of opportunities to take a snap with Chemmy and Bode the bear too!
Good luck to all schools and participants taking part – we hope to see you there!
