Ski Serre Chevalier - Briancon

Europe’s highest Alpine town Briançon is known for its maze of medieval streets, friendly atmosphere and World Heritage landmarks. Distinct from other ski resorts, this working town has a local theatre, choice of cinemas and several museums – one specialising in ski history. France’s first ski school was established here in 1902 and the ancient old town is a historic place for students to explore, with its sundials, cobbled streets and UNESCO-listed walls.

After a day on the slopes, there’s plenty to keep your group entertained. Students love the waterfalls and slides at the indoor fun pool, or you could cheer on a team at the local ice-hockey rink. There’s also sightseeing and shopping in the town itself, plus a choice of in-house activities, from group games and discos to relaxing film nights.

Skiing

Briançon’s ski area sits in a south-facing valley beneath stunning peaks in the Ecrins National Park. Set at the far end of the Serre Chevalier piste network, it has a reputation for sunny weather. Perfect for beginners and intermediates, there are easy greens to practice your turns on, while the challenging ‘Vauban’ red run brings confident skiers all the way back into town.

At higher altitude, the views are breathtaking and, with greens and blues above the tree line, even beginners can enjoy the best scenery. Lower down, tree-lined slopes meander through a beautiful, protected forest area.

OTHER FRENCH SCHOOL SKI TRIPS

Ski Pra Loup

Set in the Southern Alps, Pra Loup’s sunny weather, laid back vibe and family friendly focus make it a great choice for school ski trips. A purpose-built resort made up of two villages, Pra Loup 1600 has a good choice of shops and cafes, while Pra Loup 1500 is more peaceful. The Espace Lumière ski area has been well designed to maximise your ski time and, When each ski day is done, there’s the local ice-rink and cinema to enjoy, as well as plenty of après-ski activities to keep your group entertained.

More popular with French families than English crowds, Pra Loup also gives school groups an opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and brush up on their language skills, while the low-key nightlife means that everyone can get a good night’s sleep.

Skiing

Pra Loup’s ski area appeals to all abilities. The village-level nursery slopes are a relaxing place to get started and, when it’s time to progress, a network of blues sweeps from the top of the mountain down to Pra Loup 1600.

Experienced skiers have plenty of reds and the odd black run to challenge themselves on, while the resort’s long open pistes provide ample space to progress. Reliable snowfall and some France’s best snowmaking facilities keep the pistes topped up all season, and the low-level tree runs makes skiing back to base easier in bad weather.

OTHER FRENCH SCHOOL SKI TRIPS

Ski Tignes

Divided into five villages, Tignes shares the Espace Killy ski area with neighbouring Val d’Isere and the extensive lift pass allows your school group to ski both resorts. Our hotel is in Tignes Le Lac. This lively area has plenty of shops and restaurants plus a sports centre for evening activities including a swimming pool with waterslides. It also has runs into the village making it an extremely convenient choice for skiers.

Home to some of Europe’s highest slopes, snow cover is exceptional and the Grande Motte glacier stays open for skiing all year. Fast chairs and gondolas ferry your students around the slopes and the funicular train rockets them to the glacier in seven minutes. Attracting everyone from first-timers to professional freeriders, Tignes is also a great place to find inspiration and ski your first runs.

Resort Facilities

Combining the ski areas of Tignes and Val d’Isère, the full Espace Killy lift pass offers over 300km of piste making this big-name ski area a fantastic choice for school groups. With a handful of green runs and a good range of blues, most are content with the local slopes, while an all-areas pass means more choice for improvers.

Espace Killy comes into its own when beneath the skis of intermediates, who can whizz down the reds, tackle un-groomed blacks and ski into Val d’Isere via the 1992 Olympic downhill. The exposed slopes add extra challenge when the weather closes in but the panoramas on clear days promise big grins and great photos.

Ski SuperDevoluy

A quiet resort in one of the Southern Alps’ largest ski areas, SuperDévoluy is a great choice for schools. Purpose-built with superb piste access, Swing open the hotel doors and you’re within minutes of the lifts. Linking to the neighbouring resort of La Joue du Loup, the lift system is super-efficient and snow cannons help to keep the pistes in excellent condition. There's plenty to do for après-ski, your group can watch the weekly torchlit descent, and eat crèpes to their heart’s content.

Skiing

Sharing the ski area with La Joue du Loup, most of the runs are rated easy or intermediate, with varied terrain that give plenty of scope for mixed ability groups. Confident skiers can experience the resort from top to bottom as they conquer their fears on the high altitude blacks and finish on the flowing blues that run back towards the village.

Ski Serre Chevalier - Chantermerle

Home to three main villages and the historic town of Briançon, the Serre Chevalier Valley is an exciting ski area for schools. With direct slope access, our hotel sits in the calm and picturesque village of Chantemerle. Ski Châtel

Châtel is a well-known and traditional Alpine ski resort located close to the border with Switzerland. Offering two main areas, Super Châtel and Pré la Joux, each offering a range of skiing above and below the tree-line with spectacular views across the region.

With well-maintained slopes, traditional Alpine scenery and a short transfer from Calais, Châtel is a great choice, and benefits from being less busy than the nearby resorts of Morzine and Avoriaz. With a variety of challenging red and blue tree-lined runs, a half-pipe and a BoarderX park for the snowboarders, Châtel has something to offer everyone.

The Châtel liftpass includes skiing at Châtel, Super Châtel, Linga and Pré la Joux covering 45 lifts and 83km of pistes. The Portes du Soleil pass covering all lifts on the map is available at a supplement (details on request).

Skiing

Châtel forms part of the immense Portes du Soleil ski area, with over 600km of skiing. Beginners either start their week on the gentle slopes of Super Châtel, which is served by a ten-man telecabine, or at Pré la Joux during the busy season. From here progression is often quick and towards the end of the week instructors take their groups further afield for a real sense of adventure.

At Super Châtel intermediates will also enjoy long tree-lined red pistes with superb views over Lake Geneva, running all the way down into Switzerland. For advanced skiers, the choice of high quality skiing is absolutely vast including the notorious “Wall” in Avoriaz with its almost vertical mogul field.

OTHER FRENCH SCHOOL SKI TRIPS

Ski Morzine

Morzine is a traditional Haute Savoie village with a typically French ambience: fine chalet buildings, a good variety of shops, a weekly market and genuinely friendly bars. Being one of the twelve resorts that form the immense Portes du Soleil ski circuit, you can access over 600km of piste through 208 ski lifts and two countries.

Set at a lower altitude, Morzine shares its forested slopes with Les Gets, where the highest peaks give stunning views of Mont Blanc. With one of our shortest transfer times from Geneva, you’ll arrive in resort just over an hour after leaving the airport. A club can be hired exclusively for our groups for early private discos.

A top choice for beginners and intermediates, the Portes du Soleil ski circuit straddles the France-Swiss border, taking in almost 280 pistes. The local skiing is excellent and Morzine’s 64 local runs are more than enough to keep most skiers busy for the week.

Skiing

While beginners perfect their snow ploughs on the treelined blues, intermediates can carve across the reds in Les Gets and cruise along undulating runs back to the village, leaving advanced skiers to tackle the World Cup descent or clock-up some Portes du Soleil ski miles.

Advanced skiers, with the extended pass, will also appreciate the extensive domain of the Portes du Soleil and a trip to Avoriaz is highly recommended. The area has hosted the Snowboarding World Cup – there are specially designed snow parks in both Morzine and Les Gets and the range of blue and red runs will keep snowboarders challenged all week. The lift pass included in our tour price covers the Morzine/Les Gets ski area. The Portes du Soleil pass is available at a supplement.

Ski La Plagne

La Plagne is at the hub of the Paradiski ski circuit, one of Europe’s largest interlinked ski areas offering 425km of skiing. Two is the magic number in Paradiski – the ski area covers La Plagne and the neighbouring resort of Les Arcs, features two glaciers, two doubledecker cable cars each carrying over 200 people and a vertical drop of 2km!

In addition to the huge variety on offer, La Plagne has an excellent snow record and varied evening entertainments, making it a popular choice for British schools. Plagne Centre and Belle Plagne are the main resort hubs, each providing a wide choice of lifts to explore further afield and access the surrounding satellite villages. At night groups can access the activities on offer across the resort. Plagne Centre is accessible on the free resort shuttle, whilst a gondola runs to Plagne Bellecote until 1am.

Skiing

Just 50m from our accommodation is the ski school meeting point, nursery slopes and a choice of lifts providing direct access to either Plagne Centre or Aime La Plagne, or you can follow the forested runs down to Plagne Montalbert.

Intermediates and advanced skiers have an unrivalled choice of runs, above and below the tree-line, from long, gentle cruisers to steep and challenging blacks.

Ski Isola 2000

A favourite resort for French and Italian skiers, Isola 2000 is situated just 90 minutes from Nice and the Cote d’Azur, close to the Italian border. Activities include the Aquavallée swimming pool complex (coach journey required), nightskiing and ice-skating on a natural rink, plus the traditional end-of-week disco. The resort offers a variety of shops and restaurants.

Levant, on the opposite side of the resort, can be reached by pistes and chairlifts from the resort centre. Snowboarders are well catered for with a snowboard fun park, boardercross and half-pipe. The resort has a Franco-Italian feel – no stress and no rush!

With 120km of pistes and 22 ski lifts, the resort is particularly suited to skiers looking for doorstep skiing, a good variety of runs and an excellent sunshine record! You can also ski at nearby Auron, which offers over 130km of tree-lined skiing.

Skiing

Three interlinked ski areas sit in a horseshoe shape around the resort with a large nursery area at the base. Beginners will enjoy the green runs at village level – all easily accessible and in a sunny bowl.

Intermediates will be spoiled with the scenic runs through the trees, especially in the Domaine de Mene and the Col de Lombarde where there are some interesting red runs to sample.

For the more advanced skier, access to the St. Sauveur sector of the resort is reached by gondola which delivers skiers to Pelevos at 2,320m. From this point better skiers can be challenged by some good reds and blacks.

OTHER FRENCH SCHOOL SKI TRIPS

Ski Espace Diamant

The ski area of Espace Diamant combines rustic charm with the superb facilities of a 21st century ski resort, set against the imposing backdrop of western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc.

One of the French Alps’ newest ski areas, Espace Diamant opened in 2005 to join five established resorts (Notre dame de Bellecombe, Crest Voland, Les Saisies, Praz sur Arly and Flumet) into 185km of interlinked slopes. Modern and well-designed lift systems mean access around the area is easy and allows you to get the most out of your week. Furthermore, its location right at the foot of Mont Blanc means that it enjoys considerable snowfall – in fact the Les Saisies area of Espace Diamant is one of the most snowsure French Alpine resorts. Combine breathtaking scenery and traditional Savoie villages, this resort is one of France’s best-kept secrets and is perfect for a school ski trip.

Espace Diamant enjoys several benefits to more established Alpine resorts – quieter slopes and a more personal, friendly feel and service. It also makes it a great place for beginner skiers, as there is more time and space to learn in an uncrowded, fun environment.

Skiing

The ski area of Espace Diamant combines rustic charm with the superb facilities of a 21st century ski resort, set against the imposing backdrop of western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc.

The skiing ranges from long wide tree-lined runs on the lower slopes to some epic powder bowls and steep black runs higher up. Variety is king here, with each of the original five resorts having its own character in addition to its own beginners area.
